F-MATS — Functional Movement Analysis and Treatment Strategy — is a clinical assessment and treatment framework developed across more than twenty years of neurorehabilitation practice. It integrates biomechanical analysis, neuroplasticity principles, functional goal-setting and evidence-based intervention sequencing into a single repeatable structure.
The problem it addresses is familiar to most clinicians: assessment and treatment often run as separate exercises. A patient is assessed thoroughly, then treated according to habit, preference or whatever the department is equipped for. F-MATS exists to keep the line between what was found and what is done unbroken, and to make progression a matter of measurement rather than intuition.
F — Functional assessment
Assessment begins with real-world movement quality, evaluated using validated outcome measures rather than impairment scores alone. The question is not only which muscle is weak, but which task the patient cannot complete and why.
M — Movement analysis
Kinematic and neuromuscular analysis identifies the compensatory strategies a patient has adopted. Compensation is not inherently wrong — it is often the nervous system's most efficient available solution — but it must be recognised explicitly before deciding whether to reinforce or retrain it.
A — Approach determination
Intervention is then selected on evidence rather than modality preference, drawing across manual therapy, neuroplasticity-driven exercise and technology-assisted rehabilitation. The framework is deliberately agnostic about tools; it constrains how the choice is justified, not which choice is made.
T — Targeted treatment
Treatment is built around measurable functional goals specific to the patient. Each intervention should be traceable back to a finding in the first two stages, and forward to a goal the patient recognises as theirs.
S — Systematic progression
Progression is data-driven, with periodic reassessment using the same outcome measures applied at baseline. This closes the loop: the framework re-enters at stage one rather than terminating, which is what makes it usable across long neurological caseloads.
Where it is applied
F-MATS is currently in use at Manipal Hospitals Dwarka, across all fifteen APARC Health & Motion centres, and at ShardaCare HealthCity. Its clinical applications span stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and Parkinson's disease, as well as orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery and paediatric neurological conditions.
The framework is taught through clinician workshops that have run in Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Malaysia.
